Google新员工工作一年 70万美元买加州豪宅
豪宅的主人,Google新员工李星觉得自己的收入很有限,而“那些在Google工作4年以上的人就很不一样了。他们的收入都上千万美元了”。
李星是一年前加盟Google的。
那时候Google即将上市,李星拿到的内部员工股票期权价格是80美元。
一年之后的今天,Google的市值已经让人“高山仰止”。300美元上下浮动的股票价格,让外界广泛流传着Google员工发家致富的传说,前不久就有报道称Google新贵们源源不断在公司附近的加州阿瑟顿(Atherton)小城购房买地,实力强劲,令人瞩目。种种传闻不禁让外人浮想联翩:是不是在Google工作的个个都发家了。
“其实没有那么多,”李星说,“我到Google时间短,虽然期权的价格拿得还不错,但是收入也很有限,那些在Google工作三四年以上的人就很不一样了。”这种差距是极其巨大的,“在这里工作4年以上的人收入都上千万美元了。”
其实对新人李星来说,他也算不错了。今年年底,他将入住在加州新购置的联体别墅,价值70万美元。飙升股价
Google股价从一年前上市时的每股85美元,一路飙升到300美元左右。
“市场对Google的反应是因为自原始股上市后,它的业绩极大地超出了人们的预期。”位于纽约华尔街的SusquehannaFinancial公司的分析师马瑞尼·沃克(MarianneWolk)在接受本报记者采访时说。
“因为我们的技术力量提供了非常好的产品。”戴比·弗沃克(DebbieFrost)说。弗沃克在Google专门负责国际媒体的相关事宜,“我们和用户之间建立了很强的忠诚度。”
在哥伦比亚大学商学院电子信息研究中心的项目管理人员珍妮(JennieBourne)认为,Google的巨大成功是因为它免费而且功能强劲。
“当你使用Google,你所搜索到的相关信息是最多、最好时,它的名声也就传出去了,而且网络使用者一旦习惯了一个搜索引擎,就不愿意再换了。”一个在美国IT业工作多年的软件工程师说。
Google从创业到现在这么大的声势,从来没有做过广告,口口相传造成的效应已经使Google在英语口语里成为一个动词,和搜索(search)同样的含义。
新闻记者出身的珍妮认为Google的信息尤其是新闻,不是出自编辑的控制,而是由每个人选择的。
“Google体现了互联网的自由精神,”珍妮说,“当你得到超强的搜索效果,同时又使用起来非常简单时,Google自然要成功了。”特色管理
而这一切都来自于Google富有特色的管理。
“Google所拥有的那种技术和管理水准,我只有在以前的贝尔实验室见过。”珍妮说。
“这里牛人特多。”李星说。
李星来自中国山西,来美国后在杜克大学读计算机博士,毕业之后加盟Google,这对他来说是非常理想的。之前,李星在纽约的IBM做过半年左右的实习生,觉得Google的总体素质相对要高。
“尤其是技术方面,我们创始人和元老的技术就极强,再加上申请的人多,选择也多,”李星说,“技术强的都来这里,这有很多人拿过奥赛金牌。”
据李星说,很多人来Google工作,薪水都比以前低,但就是冲着Google富有创造性的工作环境和带来无限希望的股票。
以技术见长的Google,对技术人员的管理也相对宽松。Google没有从上到下严格的管理体制,也不主张软件工程师局限在一个固定小组中,职工根据自己的兴趣选择工作的方向,在一个小组工作一段时间,公司会鼓励你换一个组。
“我觉得这里自由多一些,创新多一些,工作起来就很有激情。”李星谈到最近微软公司员工跳到Google,很大一部分冲着在Google工作的创造性。
不过跳槽到Google的微软员工,最轰动的也就是李开复了,美国华盛顿州西雅图高等法院法官史蒂芬·冈萨雷斯上周四刚刚裁定他还不能立即赴Google上任。
“李开复来Google的时候我们也都见过,在一起聊过,”李星说,“他是那种管理和技术都特别棒的人。”美妙前景和大多数来Google的人一样,31岁的李星对Google的前途极有信心。
华尔街的分析师们在这点上也有着相同的看法。Google的股票在前两天浮动到300美元,但是宝德信(PrudentialFinancial)的分析师马克(MarkJRowen)重申了他对Google市场潜力的肯定,把对Google的估计价格从284美元提高到400美元。
在7月22日的一份报告中,这位分析师提到,Google在表现相对较弱的第二季度收入增长是110%,其每股盈余显著超过了所有的估计。宝德信预期Google的每股盈余和收入都会持续稳定地增长,从而带动其每股的股票价格。2005年和2006年的每股盈余预期分别从5.34美元增长到5.52美元、7.1美元增长到8.36美元
这样的利好趋势对李星来说听起来会像音乐一样悦耳。
Google的员工在获得公司股票期权之后第一年可以卖出25%,以后每年都可以卖出25%,4年之后可以全部卖出。李星在Google待了一年,他刚刚在Google股票达到300美元的时候卖出25%的期权股票。
80美元期权,他只出手了四分之一。且别说将来,现在他已经在寸土寸金的加州湾区以70万美元的价格买了一幢160平方米的房子。
李星的房子今年年底建成,是有3个睡房的联体别墅。离Google有15英里的路程,开车也就是十几分钟。虽然他的很多同事都买的是几百万美元的房子,李星还是对自己买到房子感到很幸运。在加州,因为购房太贵,大部分家庭都是租房而居。
